Meet Dr Maged Aziz, New Zealand-Trained Vascular Surgeon
Dr Maged Aziz holds two fellowships from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, one in General Surgery and one in Vascular Surgery, an unusual combination that took years of additional training beyond what most surgeons take on. Because the college covers both countries under a single qualification, his fellowships carry equal standing in New Zealand and Australia, and he holds full registration to provide both varicose vein treatment and surgical care in each.
A New Zealand Beginning
Dr Aziz’s surgical career didn’t start in Australia. He arrived in New Zealand in April 1997, sat the clinical exams required for registration, and began working as a house officer and surgical registrar before going on to general surgery training. Over the years that followed, his training and early career took him through hospitals in Palmerston North, Timaru, Auckland, New Plymouth, and Hamilton, and further south to Dunedin, giving him a working knowledge of both the North and South Islands that go well beyond any single city.
Why He Built His Career Across Both Countries
Still a Familiar Face Across the Country
Although Dr Aziz has been based in Australia since 2007, his ties to New Zealand never really loosened. He has spent years returning to work as a vascular surgeon locum in Dunedin, typically four to six months of the year, treating patients in a city he already knows well. As demand for his care has grown, he’s now extending that same access beyond Dunedin to Invercargill and Wanaka, so more communities across Otago and Southland can see him without having to travel to a major Centre.
A Family Story
It was in the South Island town of Timaru, back in 1997, that Dr Aziz met his wife Debbie. The two later married, and Debbie now manages Advanced Vascular day to day, which means patients dealing with the practice are dealing with someone who has her own long-standing connection to New Zealand too.
