Meet Dr Aziz, Your New Zealand-Trained Vascular Surgeon

Dr Aziz began his surgical career in New Zealand, arriving in 1997 and training across hospitals nationwide before earning his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, a qualification that enables him to practice in both New Zealand and Australia. It was in the small town of Timaru, where he met his wife Debbie.

Although his vascular training later took him to Australia, his connection to New Zealand never really ended. For the past seven years Dr Aziz has returned every year to vascular locums in Dunedin, with a decision recently to expand the access to varicose veins treatment into more communities across New Zealand.

Do I need a GP referral before I can book?

No. You can book straight in with Advanced Vascular. A referral isn't a requirement to make an appointment but can later be arranged prior to your appointment.

What's the real difference between a vein doctor and a vascular surgeon?

A vein clinic will usually offer you one type of treatment, because that's the one they're set up to do. Dr Aziz is a fully qualified vascular and general surgeon, so he can scan you accurately and choose from the full range of non-surgical or surgical options based on your veins, not on what the clinic happens to provide.

Do I need private health insurance to be seen?

No. But if you do have cover, you're unlikely to face any out-of-pocket cost for your treatment depending on your level of cover.

Is this only for people who've already been waitlisted through the public system?

Not at all. Plenty of patients book in privately from the start. It's simply the faster route if you'd rather not wait.
